Després d'uns anys de crisi, sembla que els negocis tornen a anar bé i el 18 d'octubre de 1831 els teixidors -amos dels seus propis telers, recordem-ho, però no de la seda-, demanen al Préfet del Rhône, M. Bouvier-Dumolart, que es reinstauri una tarifa mínima per als teixits. Dies després, el 25 d'octubre, sis mil canuts, tant caps de taller com obrers compagnons, es manifesten per donar pes a la demanda. Les cròniques insisteixen, és una manifestació multitudinària, però sense armes ni pals. Aquell mateix dia, davant la prova de força, el Préfet accepta de reunir teixidors i soyeurs en comissió, i s'aprova un tarif.
Però hi ha un centenar de soyeurs repatanis que no reconeixen la signatura feta pels seus delegats i es neguen a aplicar la nova mida. Torna a haver-hi agitació i sembla que ara són els compagnons, més radicals, els qui porten la veu cantant.
El 30 d'octubre surt al carrer l'Écho de la fabrique, la primera publicació de treballadors francesos, que ens mostra que els canuts s'estan organitzant. Els soyeurs continuen refusant l'acord, i com que a més es neguen a distribuir noves comandes, fent una mena de lock-out, els canuts anuncien una vaga per al 21 de novembre.
El 21 de novembre de 1831 és un dia assenyalat. Comença la vaga i en un primer enfrontament amb els cossos armats moren quatre teixidors. És per això que la bandera que arboren aquest dia és de color negre i té escrita una frase que esdevindrà famosa: Viure treballant o morir combatent.
S'aixequen les primeres barricades a La Croix-Rousse contra la policia i els guàrdies nacionals que hi són enviats, i es diu que nou-cents guàrdies nacionals canvien de bàndol, passen del costat dels canuts i s'hi solidaritzen. També diuen que són agafats com a ostatges el Préfet i el general de la guàrdia nacional, més tard alliberats, però la besnéta no ha aclarit si és llegenda o està documentat que el lloc on van ser retinguts va ser la famosa traboule des Voraces, un lloc inquietant que ha visitat i dibuixat i del qual us parlarà després.
L'endemà, 22 de novembre, La Croix-Rousse i altres barris són en mans dels canuts, que assalten algunes casernes, es fan amb armes i ocupen l'Ajuntament, una jornada dura, on hi ha morts a les dues bandes.
El dia 23 les autoritats fugen de la ciutat i Lyon queda en mans dels teixidors, però el que passa exactament aquest dia no està clar, perquè la història té les seves trampes. Uns diuen que els canuts propietaris de métiers són gent instruïda, gent d'ordre que protegeixen del saqueig les vivendes dels soyeurs, i que no volen que els grups republicans, oposats a la monarquia de Louis Philippe, recondueixin el moviment. D'altres parlen de tensions entre compagnons i caps de taller, i també d'inexperiència política. És en aquest ambient d'eufòria i caos que el Préfet, que havia aconseguit l'acord sobre la tarifa i que té cert prestigi, aconsegueix restablir la calma, però el Rei troba que això és poc i envia vint mil soldats.
El 3 de desembre l'exèrcit ha entrat a la ciutat, desarmat la població i matat la rebel.lió. El mariscal que comanda la tropa llicencia la guàrdia nacional, aboleix la tarifa i revoca el Préfet. Ara hi ha sis-cents morts i deu mil persones són expulsades de la ciutat.
Tots els cronistes conclouen els seus relats assenyalant que hi ha un abans i un després d'aquesta revolta, perquè a partir d'ara s'haurà de comptar amb un nou grup de gent que fins llavors era com si no existís. Citen un article de Le National, un diari de l'època, que just acabada la batalla diu així:
"Els esdeveniments de Lyon vénen a provar [...] que el poble a partir d'ara està associat a totes les idees de llibertat, a tots els desitjos de benestar que la classe mitjana va creure ser l'única [a posseir]; que entre la il.lustració, el coratge, la intel.ligència, els sentiments morals de la classe mitjana, i els de la classe obrera, hi ha poca diferència i que, com que el nombre és en molt, favorable a aquesta última, si no se li dóna equitablement la seva part, se la voldrà prendre i ho pot aconseguir".
Els canuts, tot i el fracàs que ha suposat la lluita pel tarif , no perden de vista que han sabut unir-se i donar la cara, i és per això que les seves organitzacions, encara que són prohibides, no desapareixen, sinó que es converteixen en societats secretes i molt aviat es decantaran clarament per l'opció política republicana.
